Why clean your gutters?

Cleaning your gutters is an important part of maintaining your home or business. Your gutter system is designed to redirect the flow of rainwater off the roof and away from the home. However, it is very common for leaves, branches, and other debris to obstruct water flow and cause the gutters perform inefficiently.

Clogged gutters can ultimately lead to very costly home repairs. Here are just a few problems that may arise as a result of malfunctioning gutters:

Water damage: Clogged gutters can damage your home or business exterior. Excess water from clogged gutters can seep into the building causing wood-framing as well as the roof to rot. Overflowing gutters will also soak the siding, sometimes causing paint to peel, which can lead to rotting wood and damage to your roof line.

Pests: Termites LOVE damp wood! Mosquitoes are also drawn to standing water in your gutter system! Clogged gutters trap water and give mosquitoes a place to lay their eggs. Excess water near the house will also lure termites as well as other insects.

Water Staining: Leaves, dirt and grime clog your gutters and the water has no where to go, so the water runs down the side of the structure(building) leaving a trail of dirty looking water marks.

Mold: Overflowing gutters can result in damp wood which is nothing more than a breeding ground for mold, mildew and fungus. Mold, mildew and fungus eat away at the building structure causing damage. As these molds, mildews and fungus accumulate and grow, they can spread and be difficult if not impossible to remove. Molds also are known to cause respiratory illness.

Plant Growth: Dirt and other sediment can fill up in a gutter system and that can lead to a variety of plants or grasses growing inside your gutter system. These plants will not only impede the flow of water in your gutter but also damage the wood around the gutter system.
